As a word, “aquaponics” was invented sometime in the 1970s, but as a practice it’s been around since ancient times among the Chinese, Aztecs and other cultures. While it may sound like an aquatic exercise class, the only things swimming in this case could be your dinner.

Aquaponics: A Waste-Free System to Feed the World?

Aquaculture is growing in popularity around the world, but the high density of waste created by fish farms poses an environmental threat. David Love, a project director at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, is trying to solve this problem through aquaponics -- the recycling of fish waste to feed vegetables growing on rafts.

New Roots Farm Tilapia Aquaponics Tour

We’ll be getting some tasty little locally farmed tilapia from the Aqua Farm at IRC New Roots Farm in City Heights soon (located right on Fairmount Avenue at University.) We were their test restaurant last year for their first “crop” ever, so they offered them to us again this year! We’ll get deliveries every Friday for the next 4-6 weeks, so look out

Aquaponics system benefits Vian Peace Center
Several onlookers viewed a small greenhouse, equipped with an aquaponics grow system, that was constructed by Vian resident Joshua Winn. Dignitaries with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Cherokee Nation were also on hand to have a look at the system on Thursday.

The Vian Peace Center continues to be a much-needed fixture in the community — helping those that need it most in this tough economy with the primary service of distributing food to needy families...
