Aquaponics starts to grow in Chicago and beyond
Story by Kalev.com Staff

If the world never needed a dependable power source, electricity may never have been invented. If we weren’t eager for more immediate communications, there never would’ve been the telephone, or the Internet. So it is today with fresh food and water, whose increasing scarcity is emerging as potentially the greatest issue of this century. Enter aquaponics, an inventive method of creating fresh produce from the waste in fish tanks. (Read more about how aquaponics works here.)

 Aquaponics 'waste' to heat
First off, hello to everyone, this is my first post in this group as well as the site itself. Looks like a good community you've got going on here!
I noticed while browsing the discussions here that there has been a bit of talk specifically about heating issues in greenhouses in our area, and it seems this has focused a bit on creating pellets for wood stoves. I'm curious about a couple of things here, first, how much waste is generally left over from aquaponic gardening, and how much of that can be used for making pellets? ..(The Full Story)

Fish and gourmet greens grow in an old Chicago meat plant
    By Martha Irvine

At 312 Aquaponics, Andrew Fernitz holds tilapia that are raised in barrels in a former meat-packing plant in Chicago. In a form of vertical farming, water containing waste from the fish is used to fertilize greens, which filter out the nutrients before the water is returned to the fish.

Your Thoughts: City to Promote Urban Agriculture

The mayor and the board of aldermen want to create "a framework for residential, community and commercial farming within the city limits," according to an announcement from the city.

The city of Somerville is trying to promote urban agriculture, according to an announcement sent by the office of Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone Tuesday.
"We're not just talking about community gardens here, but other food production options that lend themselves to the urban environment, including aquaponics and hydroponics," he said in the announcement.

 Aquaponics in Japan

This past Monday I returned home from a 10 day trip through Japan with my son.  It was a high school graduation gift for him (in part to exercise his four years of Japanese language classes) and a birthday present for me (one of those big deal birthdays that end in a zero.  Can you guess which one?).

One of our favorite days was the first day in Tokyo because we spent it with some incredible tour guides – Aragon St. Charles who runs Japan Aquaponics and his delightful 5 year old daughter, Fumi.
