Meriden -- If all goes according to plan, the glassed-in attachment to The Arc of Meriden-Wallingford's building will soon be filled with fish, worms and vegetables.
Executive Director Pamela Fields envisions the future aquaponics set up -- made from donated equipment and built by community volunteers -- as an employment opportunity for the people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who The Arc serves. Get the Full Story HERE.

Aquaponics GROWHAUS
Aquaponics is an emerging agricultural science involving symbiotic, recirculating systems of fish and plant production. This technique uses approximately 80% less water than traditional farming, and eliminates the external fertilizers that are necessary in hydroponics - all while generating a sustainable source of protein that does not deplete natural fishing stocks.

The final phase of GrowHaus renovations will be the construction of a commercial-scale aquaponics system  in the far west bay of our facility. Before constructing the sytem itself, we will need to replace the roof and wall panels, install an energy-efficient HVAC system, and seal the space for sanitation and security. More DETAILS.

Aquaponics and World Water Day

World water Day logoA few weeks ago I was on Skype with Meg Stout going through some changes to the Aquaponics Association website.  Meg asked me if I had ever heard of the United Nation’s World Water Day.  No, I hadn’t.  She said that it was a day set aside every year by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to think about the importance of water in the world and, by the way, this year it was focused on Water and Food.  Wow!  She sent me a link to the site and said that they were encouraging organizations to get involved.  That sure started my mind racing. Aquaponic Tanks.
Choosing a tank suitable for aquaponics is probably a no brainer. Many people grab the first thing that suits their budget, but not all tanks are the same and some can positively damage your health and kill all your fish.  The real story from Murray Hallum.

I haven’t been around the Gardenfork site very much, been busy in the greenhouse.  But for the last few days rain and, particularly, mud has kept me away from the greenhouse, so I thought I’d update you on my progress on the aquaponics project.
